Opinions | Will Huawei’s HarmonyOS surpass iOS to become the second largest smartphone OS in China?

Last month, Gong Ti, the president of Huawei’s Terminal BG Software Department, stated that the total number of Huawei’s HarmonyOS ecosystem devices has exceeded 700 million, with more than 300 million being Huawei’s own devices. TechInsights, a research company, issued a forecast report yesterday stating that Huawei’s HarmonyOS is projected to replace Apple’s iOS as the second-largest smartphone operating system in China by 2024. They predicted that global smartphone sales will rebound by 3% in 2024. Android and iOS will continue to dominate globally, but their market share in China will be eroded by Huawei’s HarmonyOS.

@Self-proclaimed Non-existence: Currently, the major mobile systems in China are Android, representing 70%~80% of the market, and iOS, taking up 20%~30%. Huawei’s self-developed HarmonyOS comes in third, but its share is virtually negligible. Given this context, it would be difficult for HarmonyOS to become the second-largest mobile system unless Apple is stripped away from China.

@Ecosystem: Once the user base of HarmonyOS increases, building its ecosystem will be the next challenge. Only a strong ecosystem can ensure long-term success; otherwise, getting surpassed and abandoned will just be a matter of time. After all, it is impossible to decouple from the global environment.

@Betty: Choosing Harmony now is like choosing iOS in 2012. As iOS doesn’t seem to have any significant advantages now, it is showing signs of decline.
