iOS 17.4 Beta Launching! EU to Allow App Sideloading

Apple to Launch iOS 17.4 Beta with App Sideloading Support in Europe

On January 23rd, Apple globally released the official version of iOS 17.3, bringing a wave of new features including enhanced anti-theft protection.

The upcoming iOS 17.4 is expected to be even more significant, as reports suggest that Apple will unveil the first beta version this week, with the major highlight being the support for app sideloading in the European region.

In accordance with the EU’s Digital Markets Act (DMA), Apple is required to complete the rectification by March 7th, opening up third-party app stores and allowing app sideloading in countries such as Austria, Belgium, Italy, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, and other European nations.

As per the provisions of this legislation, if Apple fails to address such suspected monopoly issues, it could face fines of up to 10% of its annual turnover.

However, currently, Apple is unlikely to easily extend sideloading to other regions, as the App Store generates substantial revenue through the “Apple tax” every year, serving as a cash cow for the company.

It is worth noting that due to regulatory pressure, Apple has recently pledged to open up NFC in the European region, allowing third-party payment apps to use NFC, marking a groundbreaking move.
