2023 China Mobile Shipments: Xiaomi out of top 5, Huawei in top 4!

2023 China Mobile Market Statistics

Even though it is already 2024, some statistics about 2023 are gradually emerging in the mobile phone market, whether it is about sales volume or market share, they are gradually coming to everyone’s attention.

Due to different statistical agencies, there are some discrepancies in the data, which has caused significant controversies among users of different brands.

Nevertheless, in the mobile phone market of 2023, major brands were striving vigorously, and in my opinion, the focus should be on providing a good user experience.

After all, from the current market perspective, the difference between new phones is really minimal, so products that can improve the user experience will be considered good products.

However, the International Data Corporation (IDC) has published the latest tracking report on the domestic smartphone market. According to the report, in the fourth quarter of 2023, the shipment volume of smartphones in China increased by 1.2% year-on-year to approximately 73.63 million units.

This means that after ten consecutive quarters of decline, there has been a rebound for the first time, indicating a gradual recovery in the smartphone market with an increasing number of users opting for new phones.

Additionally, in the 2024 mobile phone market, the desire for upgrades will also be very high, as there will be significant improvements in the configuration parameters of new phones.

Looking at the rankings, Honor ranked first in Android in both the fourth quarter of 2023 and the full-year 2023 domestic smartphone market shipments.

The annual TOP 5 are: Apple, Honor, OPPO, vivo, Xiaomi; while the quarterly TOP 5 are: Apple, Honor, vivo, Huawei, OPPO.

Setting aside the iPhone, the growth in data for Honor phones is quite apparent, displaying the brand’s strong performance.

If the product itself does not perform well, consumers will not support it. In my opinion, it is Honor’s gradual attention to user feedback that has led to its current effectiveness.

For example, by incorporating OIS optical image stabilization, dual speakers, and focusing on the GT series to promote the online mobile market, Honor has significantly improved the user experience.

On the other hand, Xiaomi phones have been pushed out of the top five. Although they remain in the annual TOP 5, they were displaced by Huawei in the quarterly TOP 5.

This has sparked intense debate in the mobile phone market because in the fourth quarter of 2023, Xiaomi released the Xiaomi 14 series.

Especially the Xiaomi 14 standard version, with its outstanding design and feel, along with excellent balanced parameters, indeed claimed a high market share.

However, they did not make it into the top five, which is indeed a bit puzzling. It can only be said that future Xiaomi phones will need further effort to succeed.

On the other hand, Huawei phones brought good news by making it into the top five, clinching the fourth position, which is truly commendable considering Huawei’s recent recovery.

Considering that Huawei is still in the process of making a comeback, it is expected that they will introduce some new phones in the future, leading to even greater sales growth.

After all, in 2023, Huawei phones faced significant supply pressure. When both the existing stock and new phones flood the market, the results will naturally speak for themselves.

It is worth mentioning that Huawei will be launching the Huawei P70 series next, and it is expected to achieve a much larger increase in sales volume.

In addition, the performance of OPPO and vivo remains quite stable, although vivo experienced a substantial negative growth in year-on-year increase while OPPO fared slightly better.

However, it can also be seen that the competition in the 2024 mobile phone market will be even more aggressive. Users looking to upgrade may face a plethora of new phones.

Moreover, there may also be an internal competition in terms of pricing as the hardware of new phones gradually becomes homogeneous, making it truly difficult to stimulate consumers through selling points.

Perhaps low prices can easily stimulate users, especially considering that satellite communication technology will gradually become popular in the coming market.

Finally, it should be noted that the rankings illustrate the differences between major mobile phone manufacturers at present, but in 2024, there will be a whole new opportunity for change.

So, the question is, what are your views on the rankings? Feel free to discuss and share your thoughts.
