The Advancements in Smartphone Camera Zoom: A Comparative Analysis
I can’t even imagine how powerful the zoom capability of the Huawei P60 Pro with the OV64B telephoto lens is. I can only wonder how terrifying the next generation P70 Pro, equipped with an even larger telephoto lens, will be. Perhaps it will even feature dual telephoto lenses. While the P60 introduced low-light telephoto capabilities, it remains to be seen what innovations the P70 will bring. Rumor has it that it will have a 4x telephoto capability with an extended focal range, coupled with a 1-inch primary lens. I’m definitely looking forward to the Huawei P70 Pro.
Currently, there are various telephoto solutions offered by other manufacturers. Among these, I believe that the 3x + 6x dual telephoto lenses of the OPPO Find X7 Ultra are heading in the right direction. Not only does it excel in long-distance zoom capability, but it also provides seamless transitions in the mid-range focal lengths, resulting in superior image quality across all focal ranges. Moreover, most people tend to use zoom capabilities within 10x for everyday use, rather than exclusively for long-range photography, such as at concerts.
In comparison, the 5x zoom of the iPhone 15 Pro Max yields only average image quality below 5x, primarily relying on cropping from the primary lens. As for the Xiaomi 14 Pro with its floating lens and Leica partnership, the quality is decent, but it lacks the telephoto specifications, perhaps leaving room for the 14 Ultra to address this. Both the vivo X100 Pro and Huawei P60 Pro employ the OV64B single telephoto lens, demonstrating comparable performance to Huawei, especially in extreme long-range zoom capabilities.
