OPPO and Nokia Sign 5G Patent Deal, Ending Dispute

On January 24th, Mobile China learned that OPPO has announced a global patent cross-licensing agreement with Nokia, covering standard essential patents in 5G and other cellular communication technologies. Following the signing of the agreement, both parties will put an end to all pending litigations in all jurisdictions. The specific terms of the agreement are kept confidential by mutual agreement. This signifies the conclusion of the global patent dispute between OPPO and Nokia after a two-year and seven-month-long process. Behind this nearly three-year global patent dispute lies a comprehensive competition between the intellectual property and corporate strength of both parties. The OPPO-Nokia patent case has attracted global attention from the technology industry and has become a case example of Chinese companies combating the unfair patent fees of global communication giants.

According to information from Mobile China, as of December 31, 2023, OPPO has laid out 5G communication standard patents in more than 40 countries and regions globally, with a total of 5900+ patent families in global patent applications, 3300+ 5G standard patents declared in ETSI, and over 11,000 standard document submissions in 3GPP. According to the “Global 5G Standard Essential Patents and Standard Proposal Research Report (2023)” released by China Academy of Information and Communications Technology and the “Global 5G Standard Essential Patents Strength Report” published by IPlytics in October 2023, OPPO ranks at the forefront of global comprehensive 5G standard essential patents strength.
