Samsung Unveils Galaxy S24 Series with Strong Focus on AI

In the early hours of January 18, 2024, Samsung officially introduced the new generation of high-end flagship products: Samsung Galaxy S24, Galaxy S24+, and Galaxy S24 Ultra. Unlike previous years, the emphasis this time was on imaging. The Samsung S24 series launch event revolved mostly around Galaxy AI, with a strong “All in AI” vibe throughout. Samsung highlighted five features empowered by Galaxy AI during the event. Let’s delve into these features.

The native calling application of the Samsung Galaxy S24 series comes with built-in real-time translation for calls, offering live two-way voice and text translation. Moreover, the device-side AI ensures the privacy of user conversations. The Samsung keyboard module also includes AI translation functionality, supporting real-time processing of 13 languages. It can translate text messages, emails, and introduce new features like instant search, voice recording for work purposes, Samsung Notes, and a writing assistant, all integrated with AI enhancements.

In terms of imaging, the cameras of the Samsung Galaxy S24 series are powered by the AI imaging toolkit “Super Vision Imaging,” which delivers a high-quality creative experience throughout the shooting, editing, and sharing process. For example, it enables 10x zoom photography through AI technology. During post-editing, the system provides intelligent editing recommendations. Additionally, users can select and move people or objects in photos, with AI automatically filling in missing background details.

Using AI large models on smartphones is not new. As early as May of last year, Google announced the integration of on-device large models on Pixel devices at the I/O developer conference. Subsequently, Huawei, OPPO, Honor, and other brands followed suit. For instance, Huawei’s HarmonyOS 4 system fully incorporates the Pangoo large model, becoming the world’s first mobile terminal operating system embedded with AI large model capabilities. The recent OPPO Find X7 series smartphones became industry pioneers in deploying a 7-billion-parameter large model on the device, boasting leading on-device visual large model performance.

With support from the 7-billion-parameter large model, the OPPO Find X7 series offers various AI functions. For instance, it includes AI call summary, where the phone automatically generates a call summary post-call, detailing call duration, the name of the caller, key points discussed, important information, and identifies action items like meeting schedules, locations, tasks, etc. This feature is particularly beneficial for professionals, significantly enhancing daily work efficiency.

Another feature, AIGC Elimination, leverages powerful AI large models to swiftly edit and enhance images. Users can select areas they want to remove in a picture, and the phone, with the help of large models, intelligently erases the selected content and automatically completes the blank area, making the image look more perfect and natural. This function can be used to remove crowds in scenic photos, unnecessary items on the streets, etc., ensuring users effortlessly obtain clean and beautiful pictures, perfect for photography enthusiasts.

The Xiaobu Assistant, fully integrated with large models, currently offers functions like Xiaobu Creator, Xiaobu Photo Studio, Xiaobu Live, and Xiaobu Q&A. Users can interact with Xiaobu through voice or text, creating various interesting content. For example, users can request Xiaobu to generate a poem, a story, a song, a piece of code, etc. Based on user preferences, Xiaobu utilizes large models to produce grammatically and logically sound content, presenting it in either voice or text format.

It is worth noting that the 7-billion-parameter large model applied in the OPPO Find X7 series provides more accurate answers compared to 10-billion-parameter large models. Additionally, the Andes large models achieved industry-leading latency levels. Concerning privacy and user experience, the Andes large models, combined with OPPO’s edge-cloud collaborative strategy, effectively protect user privacy data, enhance response speed, save data usage, and adapt to different network environments.

Since the beginning of 2024, from the OPPO Find X7 series to the Samsung S24 series and the initiatives of various smartphone manufacturers, on-device AI large models have emerged as a significant competitive point in the current mobile industry and are likely to become a major trend in the future.
