Overview of Indian Smartphone Market in 2023

Today, on February 14th, IDC, a market research institution, released a report on the 2023 Indian smartphone market, indicating that the total shipment of smartphones in India is expected to reach 146 million units in 2023, with locally manufactured Chinese smartphones accounting for over 60% of the market share.

According to the report, there is a 1% year-on-year increase in the total shipment of smartphones in India in 2023, reaching 146 million units. The average selling price (ASP) has seen double-digit growth for the third consecutive year, reaching $255 (approximately 1834 RMB). Moreover, the market share for high-end smartphones (priced over $600) has grown from 6% in 2022 to 10% in 2023.


Looking at specific brands, Samsung experienced a 5% decrease in shipments, but still maintained the leading position with a 17% market share. Its average selling price also reached a historic high of $338 (approximately 2431 RMB).

vivo (excluding iQOO) saw an 8% increase in shipments and a 9% increase in average selling price, climbing to the second position with a market share of 15.2%, being the only brand among the top five to achieve growth.

Even though realme’s shipments declined by 12.9%, it secured the third position with a market share of 12.4%, driven by its extremely cost-effective models.

Xiaomi and OPPO, both domestic manufacturers, respectively took the fourth and fifth positions with market shares of 12.4% and 10.3%.


Apple, in the sixth place, had the highest average selling price at $940 (approximately 6762 RMB), with a sales volume of 9 million units.

Considering the top five brands, the market share of Chinese smartphones has already exceeded 50%. Additionally, with brands like OnePlus, Poco, and Micromax following suit, locally manufactured Chinese smartphones now dominate over 60% of the Indian smartphone market.
