Neoverse CPU Core Designs Unveiled

Arm introduces its latest generation Neoverse CPU core designs, Neoverse V3 (code-named Poseidon) and N3 (code-named Hermes), amid the ongoing transformations in the computing market. These two cores are set to bring greater scalability and faster computing power to the server, cloud computing, and infrastructure sectors.

Background of Neoverse Initiative

Five years ago, Arm announced the Neoverse initiative aimed at advancing CPU core development for servers, cloud computing, and infrastructure. This initiative comprises three series: V-series focusing on high-performance applications, E-series targeting efficient applications, and N-series emphasizing energy efficiency. The Neoverse series has been significantly successful in the market, gaining broad recognition from cloud service providers and the infrastructure market.

Neoverse V3 CPU Core

Neoverse V3 is designed for high-performance systems and can be configured with up to 128 cores. This design introduces CXL 3.0 and HBM3 technologies, providing a larger and faster Computing Subsystem (CSS). V3 demonstrates significant improvements in single-thread performance and memory support, enhancing the computing power for high-end applications.

Boasting substantial performance upgrades, V3 aims to deliver the highest single-thread performance, showing performance gains ranging from 10% to 20% in simulated tests.

Additionally, V3 has been optimized in various aspects, particularly in mesh interconnect, to enhance overall performance and system efficiency. V3 supports the latest memory and I/O standards, including LPDDR5, DDR5, and HBM3, and has upgraded CXL support from 2.0 to 3.0, making computing more flexible and efficient.

This V3 model offers a ready-made CSS design for easier integration into customers’ chip designs, along with interconnectivity between chips, providing more options for system architecture.

Neoverse N3 CPU Core

Neoverse N3 CPU Core

Neoverse N3 is a highly efficient balanced CPU core, configurable with up to 32 cores. N3 demonstrates a 20% improvement in performance per watt, with slightly over 1 watt power consumption per CPU core at 40W TDP, significantly enhancing energy efficiency. Performance improvements of N3 range from 10% to 30%, depending on different workloads. Some optimizations have been made in the internal structure, notably in the cache and memory subsystems, to enhance overall performance and data processing efficiency.

N3 also supports the latest PCIe and CXL standards, providing chip-to-chip interconnectivity for more flexibility and scalability in system design.

Summary

Arm has also revealed the future CPU core versions’ codenames, including Lycius, Dionysus, and Adonis. These cores will further drive Arm’s progress in the computing market, offering customers more choices and better performance.
