Xiaomi 15/OnePlus 13 to Use Ultrasonic Fingerprint

Evolution of Fingerprint Technology in Smartphones

The optical under-display fingerprint sensor is currently the most common fingerprint solution, known for its fast and sensitive recognition speed with decent accuracy. It has been widely adopted by many smartphone manufacturers. OnePlus and Xiaomi have been extensively using optical fingerprints. However, according to sources, the upcoming OnePlus 13 and Xiaomi 15 series will feature more advanced and secure ultrasonic fingerprint technology.

Ultrasonic fingerprint technology, compared to optical fingerprint technology, is capable of restoring fingerprint details on a 3D level, making it impervious to spoofing by fake fingerprints. It offers higher security than optical solutions. Moreover, ultrasonic fingerprints can be used even with wet hands, have a larger recognition area compared to optical sensors, enable quick fingerprint enrollment, and provide a more convenient unlocking experience.

OnePlus 13 and Xiaomi 15 to Use Ultrasonic Fingerprint

Xiaomi is currently testing ultrasonic fingerprint sensors and is expected to implement this technology in the Xiaomi 15 series scheduled to be released by the end of the year. OnePlus 13 is also preparing to switch to ultrasonic fingerprint technology.

Samsung and Vivo have been regular users of ultrasonic fingerprint technology. Samsung has been using ultrasonic fingerprints since the Galaxy S10 series, while Vivo has widely equipped its premium X series models with large-area ultrasonic fingerprint sensors.

Ultrasonic fingerprint technology offers significant advantages over optical solutions, albeit at a higher cost. Fortunately, for flagship devices like the Xiaomi 15 and OnePlus 13, these costs are justifiable.
