According to domestic media reports, China Telecom Shanghai has recently launched the first “10-gigabit cloud broadband demonstration community” in the Poly Horizon residential area in Yangpu District. The company expects to introduce 10-gigabit cloud broadband products within this year.

The 50G-PON technology, defined by ITU-T (International Telecommunication Union-Telecommunication Standardization Sector) as the next-generation PON standard after 10G-PON, is known for its ultra-high bandwidth, low latency, and application-level flexible slicing features, widely recognized by major global operators.

During the on-site demonstration, downloading an 8K movie lasting 2 hours (with a file size of about 90GB) was used as an example. It takes about 12 minutes with a gigabit broadband, while only 72 seconds with a 10-gigabit cloud broadband.

Shanghai Telecom stated that customers who purchase the 5G Meihao Home 399 plan or above in the demonstration community can experience the 10-gigabit cloud broadband for free. Without changing the existing plan fees, customers can experience the 10-gigabit cloud broadband for free with a downstream speed of 10,000 Mbps and an upstream speed of 1,000 Mbps.

According to the plan, Shanghai aims to preliminarily establish a “Global Dual 10-Gigabit City” symbolized by 5G-A and 10-gigabit optical network by the end of 2026. The ultimate goal of this city is to become one of the fastest, most comprehensive, and lowest latency cities in the world.
