AMOLED Chip Demand Up by 19% by 2024, Omdia Predicts

According to the latest report from the third-party market data firm Omdia, the AMOLED display driver chip market claimed the largest share of smartphone shipments in 2023. The report states that smartphone shipments accounted for 67% of the total demand. This growth is mainly attributed to the demand from iPhones and Huawei phones, as well as the expansion of product lineups from Chinese smartphone OEM manufacturers.
Despite a decrease in demand in areas such as televisions, laptops, and other applications, the total demand for AMOLED display driver chips in 2023 still increased by 1% year-on-year. It is projected that by 2024, as more LCD smartphones transition to AMOLED, shipments of AMOLED smartphone driver chips will increase by 11% year-on-year.
Furthermore, with the adoption of OLED panels in the iPad Pro, the shipment of AMOLED tablet driver chips is expected to reach 92 million in 2024, marking a 224% year-on-year increase.
Based on Omdia’s forecast, the continued growth in demand for AMOLED display driver chips in devices such as smartwatches, laptops, and OLED TVs will be significant factors driving market development in the coming years. It is expected that by 2028, the AMOLED display driver chip market will grow at a double-digit rate.
Simultaneously, as other application areas advance, the AMOLED display driver chip market is expected to maintain double-digit growth until 2030. By then, the market share of AMOLED mobile PC driver chips is estimated to reach 30%.
It is worth noting that despite the ongoing increase in demand for high-end smartphones in developed regions and the upgrading of more LCD smartphones to AMOLED, Omdia predicts that in the first and second quarters of 2024, shipments of AMOLED smartphone display driver chips will decline compared to the previous quarters. However, they will still show a positive year-on-year growth compared to 2022 and 2023.
Looking ahead, with the continuous increase in the penetration rate of AMOLED display driver chips in smartphones, this trend is expected to persist in the coming years. According to the report, by 2024, the penetration rate is expected to exceed 50% and grow at a faster pace than initially anticipated.
