Apple A18 Pro Boosts Device AI

Apple Plans to Enhance A18 Pro Chip for Device AI

On March 25, according to the latest analyst report by Jeff Pu from Haitong International Technology Research Company, Apple is planning modifications to the A18 Pro chip specifically for edge AI on devices. Jeff Pu also mentioned that Apple is ramping up production of the A18 Pro chip earlier than usual.

Our supply chain checks reveal a continuous increase in demand for Apple’s A18 chip, while sales of the A17 Pro have remained stable since February. We have observed that Apple’s A18 Pro (6 GPU version) will feature a larger chip size compared to the A17 Pro, suggesting a trend towards edge AI computing.

Expanding the chip size typically means accommodating more transistors and specialized components. However, with the increase in chip size, risks of defects, design flaws, as well as impacts on energy efficiency and heat dissipation also rise. Therefore, before the launch of the iPhone 16 later this year, Apple must strike a new balance with the A18 Pro.

As reported by Bloomberg previously, Apple plans to take a segregated approach to its AI capabilities this year, relying on cloud infrastructure (potentially in collaboration with Google) for certain functions while running others entirely on devices.

This is not the first report indicating Apple’s intentions to modify the A18 chip. A report by Taiwan’s Economic Daily suggests that the A18 will “significantly increase the number of built-in AI computing cores” and come equipped with a more powerful neural engine.

According to a review of leaks about the iPhone 15/Pro by IT Home, leaker Jeff Pu has an accuracy rate of 76.47%, for reference.
