Introduction: AI Processors for the Future

We can all feel firsthand that the era of AI has arrived. Major manufacturers are fully committed to advancing AI development, from hardware chips to software applications.

Recently, AMD held a grand AI PC Innovation Summit in Beijing, China, showcasing the diverse applications of AMD AI in various industries and demonstrating their high regard for the Chinese market.

AMD Ryzen 7 8700G

The upcoming Windows 12 will fully integrate AI technology, with AI deeply involved in system performance optimization and operational assistance!

For instance, super-resolution technology uses NPU hardware and AI algorithms to render low-resolution games and videos into high resolution, enhancing image quality. Moreover, ChatGPT 5.0 will be embedded in Windows 12, offering users a next-generation AI experience.

Therefore, Microsoft, for the first time, has set a requirement for AI computational performance of processors (not less than 40 TOPS), and currently, only AMD’s Ryzen 8000G series desktop processors meet this requirement.

To provide an exceptional AI experience on PCs, AMD has utilized three computing engines: CPU based on the “Zen” architecture, integrated or discrete GPU based on AMD RDNA architecture, and AI engine based on AMD XDNA, that is, NPU.

AMD Ryzen 7 8700G Performance Boost

In the initial test of the Ryzen 8000G processor, we used DDR5 6400MHz.

Considering the integrated graphics’ demand for high-speed memory, the price of DDR5 7200MHz memory using Micron A-Die chips has also dropped to less than 800 yuan on the market. This time, we will retest the integrated graphics performance of Ryzen 7 8700G using 8000MHz high-speed DDR5 memory to see how far it can go.

In addition to powerful integrated graphics performance, Ryzen 7 8700G embeds the Ryzen AI engine, with its neural processing unit (NPU) having a total AI computational power of up to 39 TFLOPS when combined with CPU and GPU, enabling the execution of local AI workloads without relying on the network or the cloud.

Currently, over 100 AI applications or features support the AMD Ryzen AI engine, including special effects from 4 Microsoft studios, functionalities from over 50 Adobe software, over 25 TOPAZ LABS software functionalities, over 20 Davinci software functionalities, and over 50 mainstream productivity software and functions.

According to AMD’s estimates, by the end of this year, over 150 ISV independent software vendors will support AMD AI.

It is clear that the rapid development of the Ryzen AI ecosystem is progressively covering the applications we use in our daily work.

Gaming Performance Test: 3DMark FSE Breaks 5000 Points for the First Time, Outperforming GTX 1650 D5 by 25%

AI Experience: Stable Diffusion Generates Images 6 Times Faster than GTX 1650

1. Stable Diffusion Test

Stable Diffusion requires a large amount of VRAM. In comparison to GPUs like GTX 1650 and RTX 2050, which only have 4GB of VRAM, the advantage of Ryzen 7 8700G is that it can share up to 16GB of VRAM.

Now, let’s test the rendering performance of Radeon 780M 8GB and GTX 1650 4GB. For AMD, we used DirectML for deployment acceleration, while for Nvidia, we used CUDA acceleration.

Radeon 780M took 2 minutes and 55 seconds with a VRAM usage of 7.9GB.

On the other hand, GTX 1650 4GB surprisingly took a whopping 17 minutes and 31 seconds to complete the same task, resulting in a rendering performance only 1/6 as fast as Radeon 780M 8GB.

2. NPU Experience

Ryzen 7 8700G comes with an integrated Neural Processing Unit (NPU). Currently, “GamePlus” supports NPU applications. When selecting the super-powered moments in video capture, there is an AMD Ryzen AI NPU mode available, which allows direct video recording using the NPU instead of the CPU.

During a gaming session where we achieved 16 kills, the NPU was activated after each kill to record videos without affecting the game’s frame rate.

GamePlus brings the first NPU-supported game AI training and AI game highlight capture applications. It currently supports three games: “Endless Oblivion,” “Fearless Covenant,” and “The Finals.”

By utilizing the Ryzen AI NPU mode for screen capture and recording, it does not consume CPU or GPU resources and ensures a smooth gaming experience, particularly for processors like Ryzen 8000G integrated graphics.

Summary: A Better Choice Than Sub-$1000 Dedicated GPUs

After upgrading to 8000MHz memory, Ryzen 7 8700G’s gaming performance significantly improved. We tested 11 AAA titles, running them at 1080P resolution with maximum settings, achieving frame rates exceeding 40FPS in almost all games.

Compared to using 6400MHz memory, with support of 8000MHz high-frequency memory, Ryzen 7 8700G exhibited an average gaming performance improvement of around 7%, and a remarkable 27% performance advantage over GTX 1650 D5.

It’s worth recalling the classic GTX 1060 6GB, whose gaming performance was about 25% better than GTX 1650 D5. This means that after pairing with 8000MHz memory, Ryzen 7 8700G’s integrated graphics outperformed GTX 1060 6GB.

Considering that NVIDIA early on abandoned optimizing for the Pascal architecture, in new games, Ryzen 7 8700G’s integrated graphics performance will far exceed that of GTX 1060 6GB.

Nowadays, 32GB of memory has become mainstream, granting Ryzen 7 8700G sufficient space to allocate larger memory as VRAM.

Due to price constraints, entry-level dedicated GPUs typically come with limited VRAM, such as RX 640/650 and GTX 1650, including the higher-end RTX 2050, all having only 4GB of VRAM.

Even 6GB VRAM can quickly fill up when facing the latest AAA titles, not to mention 4GB VRAM.

In conclusion: with Ryzen 7 8700G, integrated graphics under $1000 are no match.

Large VRAM capacity is not only essential for gaming but also for AI image generation tools like Stable Diffusion.

In our BIOS settings, we allocated 8GB of VRAM to Ryzen 7 8700G. During the Stable Diffusion image generation test, Ryzen 7 8700G’s performance was six times faster than that of GTX 1650 D5, which comes with 4GB VRAM.

Of course, with over 32GB of memory, it’s possible to allocate up to 16GB of VRAM to Ryzen 7 8700G.

For those interested in building a Ryzen 7 8700G platform, here is a recommended configuration:

Ryzen 7 8700G’s gaming performance is comparable to GTX 1660, ensuring smooth gameplay in 3A games at 1080P resolution, sufficient until the arrival of new graphics cards.
