Omdia: AI Laptops Shipments to Hit 1M This Year

AI Notebook PC Shipments Predicted to Reach 1 Million Units in 2024, Omdia Reports

On March 30th, IT Home reported the latest shipment forecast for Artificial Intelligence Notebook PCs by the research team at Omdia Mobile PC. According to their data, approximately 1 million AI Notebook PCs are expected to be shipped in 2024, with around 80% of them utilizing ARM chip architecture.

The research organization predicts that by 2028, the shipment volume of AI Notebook PCs will surge to an astonishing 180.9 million units, capturing about 80% of the total notebook shipments.

Omdia defines AI Notebook PCs as follows:

  • The Neural Network Processing Unit (NPU) must have a performance of over 40 Tera Operations Per Second (TOPS) individually.
  • The Random Access Memory (RAM) should exceed 16GB with DDR5 or LPDDR5 specifications.
  • The storage capacity with SSD or UFS should surpass 256GB.

The organization anticipates a trend where there will be a demand for replacing devices with Microsoft’s Windows 11 operating system starting from 2028. As a result, it is speculated that by 2030, Microsoft may cease its support for the Windows 11 operating system. In light of this, the industry is highly likely to transition from conventional laptops to AI-enabled laptops starting from 2028.

Moreover, by that time, the Natural Language User Interface (NLUI) and its ecosystem are expected to be well-established. AI Notebook PCs can assist users in transitioning from the traditional Graphical User Interface (GUI) to the Natural Language User Interface during the input phase. Through Generative AI technology, users can instantly obtain the required files or media data during the output phase, thus saving a significant amount of time spent on complex file and media operations. This novel input-output process is projected to reshape user behaviors and further transform existing business operations. Omdia predicts that this process and ecosystem will gradually take shape in the next three to four years.

Furthermore, the organization foresees Google integrating the Gemini AI model into Chromebook products, paving the way for more (overseas) elementary and middle school students to begin using AI Notebook PCs in the future.
