Baidu and UBTECH’s AI Alliance Powers Humanoid Robot Brains

On April 1st, it was reported that UBTech has recently partnered with Baidu to explore enhancing the capabilities of their humanoid robot, Walker S, by incorporating it with Baidu’s Wenzhi Grand Model. This collaboration aims to broaden the applications of embodied intelligence technology, jointly explore the application of China’s AI Grand Model with humanoid robots, accelerate the development of new high-quality productivity, and inject new momentum into the industries of artificial intelligence and humanoid robots.

“Walker, I will be going on a business trip tomorrow. Can you help me fold the clothes you have in your hands?” “Of course.” With a voice command, Walker S humanoid robot began delicately folding clothes on the table. Although not very fast, each movement was methodical. According to UBTech’s latest video on “AI + Humanoid Robots,” Walker S has made new advancements in embodied intelligent reasoning applications. By integrating the Wenzhi Grand Model, it has acquired advanced intent comprehension and fine-grained planning capabilities on top of its existing multimodal perception and motion control abilities.

From the video, it is evident that Walker S, integrated with the AI Grand Model, has made progress in semantic understanding and interaction, as well as intelligent task management. Walker S can transform into a “stylist advisor,” providing fashion advice, or act as an “organizer,” neatly sorting scattered items on a table back into a box. Even when intentionally disrupted, Walker S can intelligently adapt and reorganize items with real-time path planning updates.

How does Walker S ensure the accuracy and efficiency of sorting tasks? It is reported that during the sorting process, Walker utilizes Baidu’s Intelligent Cloud Qianfan Grand Model platform, employs Wenzhi’s reasoning capabilities for task decomposition, and collaborates with a visual language model to ensure precise identification, localization, generalized grasping, and anomaly detection, thus ensuring smooth task execution even in disruptive scenarios.

UBTech stated that humanoid robots are the best carriers of embodied intelligence. Through Baidu’s Intelligent Cloud Qianfan AppBuilder platform, UBTech’s humanoid robot, Walker S, has been empowered to access the Baidu Wenzhi Grand Model for task scheduling application development, swiftly establishing planning and execution capabilities. For instance, to ensure the accuracy and efficiency of sorting tasks, during the process, the Qianfan Grand Model platform is employed to decompose and reason subtasks through Wenzhi, accompanied by on-device multimodal perception models for precise identification, grasping, and anomaly handling, enabling Walker S to execute sorting tasks smoothly even in disruptive situations.

In the past two years, the surge in the AI industry, Grand Models, and humanoid robots has become a significant driving force for global technological development. The innovative application and implementation complexity of UBTech’s humanoid robot, Walker S, in collaboration with Baidu’s Wenzhi Grand Model technology, position them at the forefront globally.

Baidu, as a domestic leader in Grand Models, has developed Wenzhi, an industrial-grade knowledge-enhancement Grand Model with deep semantic understanding and generation capabilities across modalities and languages. In a recent evaluation by Frost & Sullivan on “China’s Grand Model Capability in 2024,” Baidu’s Wenzhi ranked first domestically across five major evaluation dimensions: mathematical and scientific abilities, linguistic skills, ethical responsibility, industry capabilities, and overall capabilities.

UBTech is one of the few companies worldwide with full-stack capabilities for humanoid robots and is among the rare few to achieve mass production from small torque to high torque (ranging from 0.2Nm to 200Nm) servo drives. Their independently developed humanoid robot, Walker, is China’s first commercially available bipedal human-sized humanoid robot. According to a 2023 report by the People’s Daily Research Institute on “Humanoid Robot Technology Patent Analysis,” UBTech leads globally in the number of effective patents on humanoid robots.

UBTech expressed that the integration of Grand Models and humanoid robots not only significantly raises the level of intelligence of humanoid robots but will also enhance their ability to perform diverse tasks in various environments.
