Huawei announces: P Series arriving! Demos may hit stores by end of April.

The P Series, which is on par with the Huawei Mate series of phones, is getting an upgrade.

On April 15th, Huawei Terminal officially announced that the P Series is being upgraded to the Pura Series. At the same time, Huawei released a teaser video for the Pura 70 series, suggesting that the camera of the Huawei Pura 70 series may adopt a rounded triangular design, symbolizing a “bold step forward”.

When will prototypes of the Pura 70 series arrive at offline stores? Staff at Huawei authorized experience stores informed reporters that there is currently no news about the prototypes and that they need to wait for further instructions. It is possible that they will arrive at stores by the end of April, with prices likely to be similar to the previous generation.

Upgrade for the P Series, Prototypes Yet to Reach Offline Stores

Previously, the Mate series and the P series have always represented Huawei’s flagship phones. The Mate series is mainly targeted at high-end business users, with strong overall performance, while the P series is mainly targeted at photography enthusiasts, continuously making technological breakthroughs in the field of photography.

However, the Huawei P Series has recently undergone a new upgrade, renamed as the Pura Series. Yu Chengdong, CEO of Huawei’s Consumer Business Group, stated in a related video, “The development history of the Huawei P Series is the history of mobile imaging.”

Huawei P Series Announcement

Reporters visited Huawei authorized experience stores in Shenzhen and found that prototypes of the Pura 70 series phones have not yet arrived at the stores. Regarding the arrival time of the prototypes, staff at several stores informed reporters that they have not received any notifications yet. However, a store staff member told reporters that based on the previous trend of the P series generally being launched in March, this year’s launch may not be too late, and prototypes may arrive at stores by the end of April. Regarding the price of the Pura 70 series, the store employee predicted that it would be similar to the P60 series.

In fact, Huawei renaming the P series to Pura may have been “prepared in advance.” Reporters found on the Tianyancha website that “PURA” and “HUA WEI PURA” trademarks were applied for registration by Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. on May 15, 2019. They are classified under “scientific instruments”, and the trademark status is “registered”. The registration announcement dates are April 28, 2020, and February 14, 2020, respectively.

AI Photography Expected to be the Core Highlight, New Model Likely to Sustain Popularity

Shanghai Securities relatedly mentioned that the P70 (formerly known as such) incorporates Huawei’s self-developed Pangu large model, achieving a perfect integration of on-device and cloud large models in terms of technology, with AI photography as the core highlight. Functions such as voice assistants, text generation, and image and video generation can all be greatly improved.

“With the continuous maturation and application of generative large model technology, mobile AI will become more intelligent, providing users with more personalized and convenient services. If Huawei’s Pangu large model can make the performance of the Pura 70 series in AI photography, voice assistants, and other aspects more outstanding, it will undoubtedly help Huawei stand out in the competition in the AI phone market and further stabilize its leading position in the high-end market,” said Zhang Xiaorong, Director of the Institute of Deep Research.

Wang Peng, Deputy Researcher at the Beijing Academy of Social Sciences, stated in an interview with reporters, “The AI evolution of the Huawei P70 series may stimulate other smartphone manufacturers to increase their investment and innovation in AI, thereby accelerating the arrival of the entire AI phone era. This competitive situation will prompt manufacturers to provide more intelligent and personalized mobile products and services, ultimately benefiting consumers.”

On August 29th last year, Huawei’s terminal launched the “HUAWEI Mate 60 Pro Pioneer Plan” for the first time, selling the Huawei Mate 60 Pro model online without holding a new product launch event, and achieved impressive sales. According to Counterpoint data, in the fourth quarter of 2023, Huawei’s global smartphone sales achieved a three-digit year-on-year growth rate, making it the only brand among the top ten smartphone manufacturers to achieve this achievement.

The arrival of the P70 may continue the hot market of the previous Huawei Mate series. According to Tianfeng International analyst Ming-Chi Kuo’s previous forecast, the shipment volume of the Huawei P70 series is expected to significantly increase in 2024. If the demand for replenishment of smartphone inventory can be sustained until the first half of 2024, the shipment volume of the P70 series is expected to increase by about 230% to 15 million units in 2024.

Although the Huawei Pura 70 series phones have not yet been released for sale, related topics have repeatedly hit the top of Weibo’s hot search. Strategic positioning expert and founder of Fujian Huace Brand Positioning Consulting, Zhan Junhao, told reporters that the frequent appearance of the Huawei P70 series on hot searches before its release is mainly due to its strong technical strength, market expectations, and the extensive influence of the Huawei brand. Huawei has established an image of high quality and innovative technology in the mobile phone market, and consumers are eagerly anticipating its new products.

Consumer electronics industry analyst Liang Zhenpeng, in an interview with reporters, said that the frequent appearance of topics related to the Huawei Pura 70 series on hot searches reflects the increasing influence of the Huawei brand and the high expectations of consumers for Huawei’s new phones. Trends suggest that it is likely to continue the previous popularity of the Mate series.

With the continuous release of new models, Huawei’s terminal business income is also expected to continue to rebound. In 2023, Huawei achieved a revenue of 704.2 billion yuan for the whole year, a year-on-year increase of 9.6%, and a net profit of 87 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 144%. Among them, Huawei’s terminal business became the growth engine of the company’s performance, achieving sales revenue of 251.5 billion yuan for the whole year, a significant increase of 17.3% year-on-year.
