Huawei Introduces Pura70 Series: A Fresh Start for Flagship Smartphones

In 2024, Huawei held its spring communication conference for the HarmonyOS ecosystem. Many were eagerly anticipating this event, only to find themselves somewhat disappointed. Despite featuring cars, laptops, smartwatches, wristbands, and headphones, it seemed like something significant was missing: the Huawei P70.

The question of why the Huawei P70 series hadn’t been released lingered. On April 15th, the answer was unveiled: the P series had become history, making way for the latest Huawei Pura series to embark on a new journey. And leading this launch is the Huawei Pura70 series.

Looking back now, it does seem a bit peculiar that Huawei’s top flagship is the Mate series, its youthful flagship being the nova series; shouldn’t the flagship exploring imaging and technology echo this trend? Transitioning from the P series to the Pura series, both comprised of four letters, seems like a fitting resolution. Furthermore, there’s an official response regarding the pronunciation of “Pura”.

Regarding the design of the phone, although it hasn’t been fully revealed yet, the hints from the official sources have been quite intriguing. Previously rumored to feature a triangular camera layout, the official promotional materials for the Huawei Pura70 series indeed feature a triangular motif, confirming the speculation. Each time a product is prematurely exposed, it becomes a tradition for Huawei, as the secrets of the supply chain are hard to keep.

As for whether the new design is appealing or not, it’s my opinion that we should wait until the actual device is revealed. While there are renders online, Huawei’s renders often don’t align with the real product. For example, with the previous generation Huawei P60 series, many were initially critical but gradually came to appreciate it, showcasing Huawei’s undeniable product design prowess.

Currently, the Huawei Pura70 series comprises three models: the standard version, Pro, and Pro+. As for whether there’s an ART version, there are no clues yet.

In terms of hardware highlights, the Huawei Pura70 series may introduce a new SoC chip for enhanced performance, though details might not be extensively disclosed. Asking about it would likely lead to the response that they are still clearing out inventory from four years ago at the bottom of the Songshan Lake. Personally, I believe as long as it meets the Snapdragon 8 Gen2 standard, it’s already a win.

Regarding the camera, previous rumors suggested the introduction of a 1-inch IMX989 sensor, which seems to be largely true now. After all, the leaked images clearly show a thicker camera module, forcing Huawei to employ some visual slimming designs.

In terms of camera features, I believe it might follow the style of the P60 series: the standard version emphasizing the main camera, while the Pro version focusing on the telephoto capabilities. In practical photography scenarios, the telephoto lens often sees comparable or even higher usage rates than the main camera.

As for the release date of the phone, it’s still uncertain. Richard Yu mentioned there would be news in a couple of days, which likely refers to April 18th. Moreover, Huawei’s offline stores have already started accepting reservations or pre-orders. If you’re eager to learn about this product as soon as possible, I suggest heading to a Huawei store on the morning of April 18th or 19th; you shouldn’t be disappointed.

In summary, these are the current insights we have. Regardless of how other brands may vie for attention, there’s no doubt that the spotlight for the first half of this year belongs to the Huawei Pura70, unequivocally.
