Smartphone Manufacturers Globally Beating Apple: How Many Are There?


First off, we have Huawei. In 2019, Huawei’s sales reached a staggering 240 million units, surpassing Apple to become the world’s second-largest smartphone manufacturer. However, the subsequent events are well-known to everyone. Huawei faced suppression, leading to a continuous decline in sales. Currently, it lacks the capability to compete head-to-head with Apple.

In 2023, Huawei’s smartphone sales were only around slightly over 35 million units, while Apple’s sales exceeded 230 million units, roughly just one-seventh of Apple’s.

Xiaomi Aims to Overtake Apple


Following Huawei’s decline, Xiaomi swiftly took the baton, emerging as the pride of Chinese smartphones. Xiaomi has now consecutively entered the global top three for 14 quarters.

In the second quarter of 2021, Xiaomi surpassed Apple for the first time, claiming the second spot globally. Later, Xiaomi boldly claimed to become the world’s number one by 2024, surpassing both Apple and Samsung.

Now, aiming to surpass Apple and Samsung to become the global leader in 2024 indeed poses quite a challenge for Xiaomi.

However, there’s good news. In the second quarter of 2024, Xiaomi is poised to once again surpass Apple, reclaiming the second spot globally.

According to data from research firms, due to sluggish iPhone sales, Apple’s global shipments in the first quarter of 2024 dropped by 5 million units. This decline is expected to continue into the second quarter, with Apple’s global shipments potentially falling below 40 million units.

Meanwhile, Xiaomi’s global shipments in the second quarter are expected to exceed 40 million units, thereby surpassing Apple.

Behind Xiaomi’s impressive sales figures lies the fact that over 70% of its sales are in overseas markets, with only around 30% in the domestic market.

In 2023, Xiaomi’s global sales exceeded 140 million units, with domestic sales just over 30 million units and overseas sales surpassing 100 million units. This makes Xiaomi the only domestic smartphone brand to have ever exceeded 100 million units in overseas sales, even surpassing Huawei’s peak overseas sales, which never exceeded 100 million units.

From this perspective, Xiaomi is indeed a shining star among domestic smartphone brands. The only regret is that Xiaomi’s main focus is on the low-end market, with an average price of only around 1000 yuan. Redmi accounts for about 80% of its sales. Although the sales volume is similar to Apple’s, the revenue and profit are far behind.

Hopefully, Xiaomi will continue to move towards the high-end market. With increased sales and prices, revenue and profit will also increase, giving it the ability to compete with Apple.
