Rumors: Mate60 Line Halted, Huawei Responds

On March 23rd, after verifying information with Observer Network, a Huawei insider refuted the rumors circulating online about the discontinuation of the Mate60 series: “Production has not been halted, and consumers are welcome to continue making their purchases.”

Since its launch in August last year, the Huawei Mate60 series has consistently remained a focal point in the smartphone market. Based on the situation at Huawei’s official store, the Mate60 models are still in high demand, with no need for frantic buying for the larger memory version of Mate60 Pro and Mate60 Pro+. The once elusive foldable Mate X5 series is now readily available in multiple versions.

The introduction of the Mate60 series has led to a rapid recovery in Huawei’s smartphone shipments.

Data from market research firm Canalys shows that in the fourth quarter of 2023, Huawei’s smartphone shipments in the domestic market reached 10.4 million units, a year-on-year increase of 47%, securing fourth place with a 14% market share. On the other hand, according to Counterpoint’s data for the first six weeks of 2024, Huawei held a 17% market share in China, ranking second with a 64% increase in sales compared to the same period last year. Meanwhile, Apple experienced a sharp decline of 24% in sales, holding a 16% market share and ranking fourth.

Regarding the resurgence of Huawei smartphones, Zhao Ming, CEO of Honor, recently stated in an interview with Observer Network that Huawei’s success drives the entire industry, injecting innovation, competition, and vitality into the smartphone sector. He emphasized the importance of keeping consumers passionate about the industry as the market becomes increasingly commoditized, potentially leading to longer replacement cycles for smartphones.

Historically, Huawei usually unveils its flagship P series new models in the spring. As of writing, there has been no official announcement from Huawei about the P70 series. Market analysts speculate that considering the typical lead time required for new releases, the Huawei P70 series is expected to launch in April, likely including the standard P70, P70 Pro, and P70 Art models.
