Xiaomi 15’s unveiling: first to feature a 3nm Android chip, OV50K, and ultrasonic fingerprint. An expected price increase, yet still sought after.

Xiaomi 15 Configuration Revealed: First Android 3nm Chip + OV50K + Ultrasonic Fingerprint, Even Price Hike Doesn’t Deter Excitement!

The Xiaomi 14 series achieved tremendous success, heightening everyone’s anticipation for the Xiaomi 15 series. Furthermore, Lei Jun stated last year that the Xiaomi 15 series would no longer start at “3999”. With the price no longer strictly limited, the Xiaomi 15 series can offer even better configurations.

Recently, the well-known digital informant “Digital Chat Station” revealed some information about the standard version of Xiaomi 15.

With the Xiaomi 12 series, Xiaomi voluntarily downsized the screen to under 6.5 inches, aiming to create differentiation as a “small screen flagship”. Following the adoption of a straight screen design in Xiaomi 13 and Xiaomi 14, sales soared.

The blogger hinted that Xiaomi 15 will continue this product design, still positioning it as a small-screen flagship, with a screen size between 6.3-6.4 inches.

Xiaomi 15 will also debut with the first Android 3nm chip – Snapdragon 8 Gen4. This chip is expected to debut in October, marking the first Android chip based on the 3nm process (TSMC N3E) in the Android camp. It will utilize Qualcomm’s in-house Nuvia architecture rather than the Arm reference architecture, promising significant improvements in performance and power consumption compared to the Snapdragon 8 Gen3.

The rear module of Xiaomi 15 will retain the square Deco three-camera design in the upper left corner. The main camera is speculated to be 50 megapixels, with the model unknown. While Xiaomi 14 used the OV50H sensor, Xiaomi 15 might feature the more powerful OV50K sensor.

The OV50K is a brand new flagship sensor commercially released by OmniVision this year. It boasts a large 1/1.3-inch sensor and supports LOFIC (Lateral Overflow Integration Capacitor) technology. LOFIC adds a high-density capacitor next to each photodiode in the mobile sensor, effectively collecting overflowed photoelectrons due to saturation, significantly enhancing the camera’s performance.

Moreover, the OV50K has a dynamic range of up to 15EV, surpassing Sony’s new 1-inch sensor LTY900’s 14EV. A higher dynamic range can better capture and retain details in both highlight and shadow areas, effectively avoiding overexposure or underexposure issues, resulting in brighter highlights, clearer shadows, and a picture closer to the actual human eye perception.

In addition, the eagerly anticipated ultrasonic under-display fingerprint sensor, which is favored by many Mi fans, will also be featured in Xiaomi 15, likely prioritizing Qualcomm’s solution, but not excluding options from Goodix.

Compared to mainstream optical under-display fingerprints, ultrasonic fingerprints not only have higher recognition rates and faster recognition but are also unaffected by interference, making it effortless to unlock even with wet or dirty hands. Qualcomm’s ultrasonic fingerprint technology has evolved to wide-area ultrasonic, offering a larger recognition area. If Xiaomi 15 adopts this, it will undoubtedly greatly enhance the user experience of the device.

The Xiaomi 14 series was officially launched on October 31 last year and sold as many as 1.4474 million units from its initial sale to November 10, setting a record for Xiaomi’s flagship smartphone sales. According to the activation data of the Xiaomi 14 series previously exposed by the blogger, the series’ activation volume has exceeded 5 million units.

According to the “2024 China Mobile Internet Spring Report” released by QuestMobile, in the TOP10 list of domestic model activation devices in the first quarter of 2024, Xiaomi 14’s activation volume was 2.3 million units, ranking seventh.

The Xiaomi 15 series is expected to continue the blockbuster trend of the Xiaomi 14 series and become the “first Snapdragon 8 Gen4 smartphone” for Mi fans.

In 2020, Xiaomi officially embarked on the “Rise in Price” journey. Compared to its predecessor Xiaomi 9, the price of Xiaomi 10 increased by 1000 yuan. With the intense competition in the domestic smartphone market, the price increase of Xiaomi 15 should not be significant. It is expected to rise by a few hundred yuan. With significant upgrades in configuration, it will continue to offer high cost-performance and make friends with Mi fans.

The unveiling of the first Android 3nm chip Snapdragon 8 Gen4 + the all-new OV50K main camera + ultrasonic fingerprint, reveals the configuration of Xiaomi 15. Even with a price hike, it can still make friends. What are your expectations for the Xiaomi 15, expected to debut in October?
