Huawei Pura70 Ultra vs iPhone & OPPO: Zoom Test Review

Recently, Huawei created quite a buzz with the sudden announcement of their new flagship series, the Huawei Pura70, launching as part of their “Pioneer Program.” The news has sparked a frenzy among consumers, who lined up for hours both online and at physical retail stores, reminiscent of last year’s excitement for the Mate60. The highlight of this new Huawei flagship certainly seems to be its impressive camera capabilities.

Huawei Pura70 Ultra

The Pura70 Ultra features a one-inch retractable main camera with a macro long focal lens that boasts an F2.1 aperture, a zoom range of up to 200 times, and macro capabilities of up to 35x zoom. I took this opportunity to compare the Huawei Pura70 Ultra with the iPhone 15 Pro Max and the OPPO Find X7 Ultra to see which device comes out on top in a camera showdown.

Daylight Performance

Starting with the 10x zoom photography, the Huawei Pura70 Ultra offers a warm color style that is quite distinct from the others, making it visually pleasing, although slightly off-color at first glance.

The iPhone 15 Pro Max and the OPPO Find X7 Ultra demonstrate excellent color reproduction and white balance. The OPPO Find X7 Ultra, with the Hasselblad color science, impressively restores the vibrant greens of the trees, adding a texture-rich look.

In terms of resolution, all three devices perform well at the 10x zoom level which is not native to any of the models. The Huawei device’s shadows are not as bright, showing average detail in dark areas; the iPhone 15 Pro Max reveals brighter lower dark zones with some loss of edge detail.

Thanks to its double periscope long zoom, the OPPO Find X7 Ultra displays clearer edges and detailed textures on the central wall surfaces, maintaining good detail in darker areas without overpowering the light, offering a camera-like depth and shading in its images.

20x zoom tests the camera’s software optimization further. Each phone brings a different style to the table: Huawei’s Pura70 Ultra leans towards a warmer tone, iPhone 15 Pro Max captures a more realistic feel, while OPPO’s Hasselblad color is vivid, making it a matter of personal preference.

Night Mode

For night photography at 3x zoom, the capabilities of the three smartphones become evident. The Huawei Pura70 Ultra shows a slight tendency to overexpose compared to the iPhone 15 Pro Max and OPPO Find X7 Ultra, which manages warm yellow light tones well, maintaining a vibrant yet balanced night-time atmosphere.

Night Scene Comparison

At 10x zoom, the Huawei Pura70 Ultra’s accuracy improves, faithfully reproducing blues inside a cabinet and warm yellow street lamps. The iPhone 15 Pro Max and OPPO Find X7 Ultra also perform well in color accuracy, with OPPO enhanced by Hasselblad’s tuning, contributing to a strong nighttime mood.

Conclusion

Overall, the Huawei Pura70 Ultra stands out in its long-zoom capabilities during both day and night, comparable to other mainstream flagships, although its white balance could be improved in future updates.

The iPhone 15 Pro Max has significantly better sharpening this generation, improving its resolution capabilities; while the OPPO Find X7 Ultra benefits from its native 3x+6x double periscope long zoom, giving it an edge at higher zoom levels. Combined with Hasselblad’s superb image system, it captures delicate light and shadow details, offering a camera-like quality that photography enthusiasts should consider.
