iPhone 16 Pro/Max with Quad-Prism, 5x Zoom

On February 27th, a report by Federal Consultancy revealed that both the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max models are equipped with quadruple prism technology and support 5x optical zoom.

The Federal Consultancy report included the following information:

It’s worth noting that after the success of the exclusive quadruple prism (Tetraprism) periscope telephoto lens module in the Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max, there is an expectation of an increased adoption rate of periscope-style lens modules by other brands.

As for Apple itself, it is anticipated that in 2024, the quadruple prism periscope telephoto lens module, originally only available in the flagship iPhone 15 Pro Max model, will be featured in the iPhone 16 Pro. This hardware upgrade will be accessible to all users of the Pro series.

In the iPhone 15 Pro Max, the quad-prism camera system utilized a “folded” design, allowing for installation inside the smartphone and enabling up to 5x optical zoom and up to 25x digital zoom.

In comparison, the smaller-sized iPhone 15 Pro offers only 3x optical zoom, in line with the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max.

Referring to Ming-Chi Kuo’s report from September last year, although the iPhone 15 Pro Max currently boasts the exclusive 5x optical zoom telephoto lens, both the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max will feature this capability.

He mentioned that the quadruple prism structure in the iPhone 15 Pro Max was the major bottleneck in the device’s mass production process. Hence, Apple has increased the specifications provided by Genius Electronic Optical to compensate for the production capacity shortage at LG Innotek.
