Breakthrough Achieved in High-Performance Photonic Chips Field in Our Country

Recently, a research team from the Shanghai Institute of Microsystem and Information Technology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences made a breakthrough in the field of lithium tantalate heterogeneous integrated wafers and high-performance photonic chips, successfully developing a new type of “optical silicon” chip that can be mass-produced. The relevant research results were published online in the journal Nature on the 8th. According to the introduction, lithium tantalate photonic chips demonstrate extremely low optical loss, high-efficiency electro-optic conversion, and other characteristics. They are expected to provide solutions to the four major bottlenecks in the communication field: speed, power consumption, frequency, and bandwidth. Furthermore, they are anticipated to spur revolutionary technologies in low-temperature quantum, optical computing, optical communication, and other fields.
